Themed Paintings- Under the Sea by k04sk Themed Paintings- Under the Sea by k04sk
So on James Paick's blog he speaks about the different themes one can paint for environmental concept art. So I have decided that each day I will try to bust out 3 - 5 paintings for that particular theme ( I know he can do 5 in a day , I am not that fast .... at least not yet)

Something that I started is that I work on each painting in 20 minute intervals , and I put an online timer on my other screen. When I see that time winding down I force myself to be bolder with my decision. As soon as it hits 20 minutes I start a new painting and I keep rotating. So I kept each one of these to 2 hours a piece. However, before all this I gather some reference and spend about 20 minutes doing rough sketches on pen and paper before jumping to digital. So it is about 7 hours total. I will be doing more tests on this and themes. Next theme is cliffs.

you can find the 2 other paintings on my blog ; )

Btw, I read your blog and saw the other two images for this theme. The one with the diagonal structure, with all those fish...well, it is fucking amazing, congrats. Your exercise seems to be working perfectly, you really mastered this one :O

How did u learn about textures, distance, perspective and so on? I've been following jack Hamm's Drawing Scenery but I keep finding it hard to achieve good textures when drawing ground, for instance, or rocks. Is it just a matter of practicing and practicing drawing the subject matter (trees, mountains, etc)??? I'm sorry for this question, I know it is not easily explained but I need some advice. Right now I know about composition and plcacing objects interestingly and kind of using focal points and stuff, but when it comes to achieving realistic landscapes, I'm literally lost :/

ummm its kind of a hard question to answer , I just look at other artist that I like and try to break down how they approach it ( this usually comes from doing studies in which I try to recreate what they painting in different ways) a lot of it comes from looking at traditional masters as well. I look at a lot of traditional painting videos and try to emulate that in my painting. So again it is mostly mileage , you'll get there eventually

thanks for answering! I guess it will be hard but will come someday, hopefully. Had you drawn a lot before getting into digital or did you learn all about drawing digitally? I mean, in that case, had you tried to emulate master's style with a pencil or did u start doing it in Photoshop and stuff? Because I'd love to learn to paint digitally but I don't have a digital tablet, is there anything I could with just a mouse? I mean, getting started and used to paint digitally.

i had a good amount of drawing before i picked up digital. Foundation is important. And also get yourself a tablet. if ya can't afford one , save up for x mas time . But it is an investment you are going to need in the future. I did master studies in pencils , acrylics , etc. Just watch feng zhu videos on youtube , youll learn all you need to know

Dude, Feng Zhuo is just.....OMFG! Thanks a lot for the link. I can't afford a wacom right now but I'll try to follow the basics of the videos with a pencil at least! Appreciated that :)

I like that system! I want to try that now...

Also must say I like the composition on this one. Normally with an environmental scene with a tiny figure, you look around the area a bit before you go "Oh look, there's a dude standing on that cliff."

But with this picture my eye started in the middle 2/3 up (just where I was when I clicked on the tab), and went WHOMP - person.

I feel like more environment sketches should have the person as a focal point, rather than an afterthought - like their art teacher told them that having a human in there somewhere is good, and they found some way to stick it in. The way this is painted, it feels like the person belongs there. :) Thanks for sharing.

You're the one that gets paid to paint. I'm still trying to get a grasp on proper color theory.

well unfortunately getting paid to paint doesn't necessarily make you a dope artist. I unfortunately know some artist who are crap but somehow managed to get paid haha. So focus on the love , the money will come ;)
